Thomas Square District

About Thomas Square

The Thomas Square Streetcar District was Savannah's original suburb, built out along the streetcar lines that ran through here from 1880 into the 1920s. The streetcars are long gone, but the neighborhood they created is still here, and it's one of the more in-demand pockets of the city right now. It runs from Montgomery Street on the west to East Broad on the east, and from Anderson Lane on the north down to Victory Drive on the south. It earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. The Starland District is the arts-focused core at its southern end, with a wider collection of Victorian streets making up the rest.

The architecture here makes people slow down and take photos. Victorian, Queen Anne, Neoclassical Revival, and Craftsman homes line streets that were laid out with large lots and wide sidewalks, a real change of pace from the tighter downtown grid. A lot of these homes have been restored over the past couple of decades, and that work is still going, which is part of why the neighborhood keeps drawing interest.

The Homes

The real draw is how walkable it is. Independent restaurants, cafes, boutiques, and galleries cluster around the Starland commercial core, and Forsyth Park sits right at the northern edge of the broader area. Victory Drive, one of the longest palm-lined corridors anywhere, forms the southern boundary. Grayson Stadium and Daffin Park are just a few minutes away.

The Amenities & Character

Thomas Square reads like an actual neighborhood, not a subdivision and not a gated community. Real streets, real history, and people who are invested in their block. It's walkable, close to Savannah's creative scene, and a short hop from downtown without sitting in the middle of the tourist corridor. Tybee Island is about 25 minutes out.

The Lifestyle

Thomas Square is served by the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System, which runs zoned neighborhood schools alongside district-wide magnet and choice options. Given the arts-forward character here, the Esther F. Garrison School of Visual and Performing Arts (a district-wide lottery school) and Savannah Arts Academy are both worth knowing about. Zoned assignments run by street, so confirm the schools for any specific address with SCCPSS before you rely on them.
