Burnside Island

ABOUT BURNSIDE ISLAND

Burnside Island sits along the Vernon River, about fifteen minutes south of downtown Savannah. It’s small and quiet, and plenty of people in town have driven past the turn for it without realizing it’s there. The people who live here are happy to keep it that way. What draws them is the water. Most homes have deepwater access, and daily life is built around it.

There’s a good piece of Savannah history here too. Johnny Mercer’s father bought a summer home on the island, Vernon View, back in 1909, and Johnny spent his boyhood summers out here. The Back River that ran behind the house was later renamed Moon River, after his song. It’s the same water you’d be living on.

You’ll see a real range on Burnside. Custom estates with private deepwater docks, newer homes with big screened porches, and classic Southern houses with wraparound porches, a lot of them on large lots with direct Intracoastal access.

Rivers Edge at Camp Strachan is one of the smaller pockets within the island. Prices run from the $500,000s up past a million for the larger estates with the best water frontage.

The Homes

It’s all about the water here. You can boat, fish, kayak, or paddleboard right off your own dock, and from there it’s an easy run out to the rivers and on toward the coast.

The north end of the island has a few shopping centers and the Oglethorpe branch of the Live Oak Public Libraries. Skidaway Island and Isle of Hope are minutes away for dinner or errands, and the Abercorn corridor on the southside is a short drive. You get the quiet and the water without being cut off from town.

The Amenities & Character

Days here tend to revolve around the water, whether that’s a morning on the dock, an afternoon out on the boat, or watching the tide move across the marsh in the evening. It’s a slower, easygoing version of coastal Georgia.

You’re close to downtown when you want it and well out of it when you don’t. Homes out here don’t come up for sale often, so when one does, it usually goes fast.

The Lifestyle

Burnside Island is served by the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System. The closest public school is Isle of Hope School, a K-8 just over on the neighboring island. Island and southside attendance zones get adjusted now and then, so it’s worth checking the current zone for a specific address with the district. There are private school options nearby as well.
