Thunderbolt
ABOUT THUNDERBOLT
Thunderbolt is a small waterfront town on the western shore of the Wilmington River, about five miles southeast of downtown Savannah. It grew up around the water as a fishing and shrimping community, and that working-waterfront character is still here. Shrimp boats still run out of the harbor, the marina stays busy, and the whole town keeps a slower, easygoing pace.
There’s a lot of history packed into this little town. The 1939 yacht basin is still in use, and Savannah State University, founded in 1890 and the oldest public historically black university in Georgia, sits right beside Thunderbolt on the river. Bonaventure Cemetery, the one made famous by Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, is just up the road and worth a slow morning walk.
Thunderbolt’s housing leans toward small wooden cottages and bungalows on tree-shaded streets, a lot of them from the 1940s and 1950s, which gives the older part of town a midcentury, maritime feel.
Along the water you’ll find newer condos and townhomes with marina access and river views, which have become some of the more sought-after addresses in town. Prices tend to run more affordable than the islands, with waterfront at the higher end.
The Homes
The waterfront dining is the draw. Tubby’s Tank House sits on the bluff across from the shrimp docks, a longtime local favorite for fresh seafood and a porch view of the river. You can pull up by boat, tie off, and eat.
Past the table, the river is the whole point. Boaters, anglers, and paddlers launch right from town, and the marina has anchored this place for generations. The Victory Drive and Skidaway commercial corridor is just minutes away for everyday errands.
The Amenities & Character
Thunderbolt rewards people who like character over polish. It’s a real working-water town, not a manicured subdivision, and that’s exactly what its regulars love about it.
You’re about ten minutes from downtown Savannah and roughly fifteen from Tybee’s beaches, so you get the quiet of a small river town with the city and the coast both close by. Watching the shrimp boats come in at the end of the day never really gets old.
The Lifestyle
Thunderbolt is served by the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System, with Myers Middle and Johnson High among the nearby public schools. The district is adjusting some attendance boundaries for the 2026-27 year, so it’s worth confirming the assigned schools for a specific address directly with the district. Charter and private options around Savannah are available too.
