South harbor
About south harbor
South Harbor sits at the south end of Skidaway Island on Moon River, and it is one of those communities that people tend to discover by word of mouth. It is small, gated, and genuinely waterfront in a way that most neighborhoods can only approximate. The people who live here chose it specifically because it is not trying to be anything other than what it is: a quiet place on the water with good neighbors and easy access to everything Savannah has to offer.
The land itself has been part of Savannah's history since the 1750s, when Crown grants carved this southern end of Skidaway Island into large plantation lots fronting what was then called the Skidaway River. The waterway was later renamed Moon River (yes, that Moon River) and the landscape has changed considerably since then, but the sense of being somewhere with real history underneath it has not gone away.
South Harbor is a small community by design. Homes sit on generous lots, many with lagoon views, marsh views, or direct water access to Moon River and the Intracoastal Waterway. The architecture leans toward Lowcountry coastal (comfortable, well-built homes with the kind of outdoor living spaces that make sense in coastal Georgia). Several lots are still available for buyers who want to build, and the community has enough variety in home size and price that it works for both full-time residents and those looking for a quieter second home on the water.
The Homes
Pricing generally runs from the $500,000s to over three million, with waterfront and lagoon-front properties at the higher end. Inventory here is limited at any given time, so when something comes available it tends to move.
The amenity package at South Harbor is focused and practical. There is a pool overlooking Moon River, a marina with a boat hoist and boat slips, and courts that accommodate tennis, basketball, and pickleball. The community dock gives residents easy water access for fishing, kayaking, or simply sitting at the end of the day while the light changes over the marsh.
The Amenities & Character
What South Harbor does not have is a long event calendar or a resort-style clubhouse. That is intentional for most of the people who choose it. The Landings is right next door for anyone who wants access to six golf courses, additional dining, fitness facilities, or a larger social scene. South Harbor residents can use that proximity without being inside The Landings gates.
The Lifestyle
Life in South Harbor moves at the pace of the tides. Mornings are quiet. The marina sees activity on weekends when residents take boats out onto Moon River and into the broader Intracoastal system. The pool is a gathering spot in warm months. Neighbors know each other the way people do in small communities where the same faces keep showing up at the same places.
Downtown Savannah is about 15 miles north and roughly 20 minutes by car. Tybee Island is a short boat ride away if you go by water, or about 25 minutes by road. Skidaway Island State Park is close for walking and biking. The Village at Skidaway (with Publix, a pharmacy, and everyday services) is just up the road inside The Landings commercial area, and accessible to South Harbor residents.
