Richmond Hill
About richmond hill
Richmond Hill sits about 20 miles south of Savannah along the Ogeechee River, and it has the kind of history that shapes a place in ways you can still see. Henry Ford bought thousands of acres here in the 1930s, built homes, schools, and infrastructure for his workers, and left behind a community with more substance than most coastal suburbs ever develop. The town was renamed Richmond Hill after his death in 1941 and has been growing steadily ever since.
Today it's one of the more sought-after addresses in the Savannah area — close enough to the city to commute easily, far enough to have space and water access. The neighborhoods range from established waterfront communities along the Ogeechee and Tivoli Rivers to newer master-planned subdivisions built around lagoons and marsh views.
A Richmond Hill address isn't always the City of Richmond Hill
Richmond Hill grew fast enough that the name outran the city line. A house advertised as Richmond Hill might sit inside the city, or in unincorporated Bryan County with a Richmond Hill mailing address, or behind the gate of a named community with its own association. Each of those is a different tax bill and a different permitting office.
The historic side is narrower than most people expect too. Richmond Hill adopted its first local historic district along Ford Avenue in 2023, a short run from the Courthouse Annex to the corner at Timber Trail. Ford Avenue as a corridor is much longer than the district on it.
Between the river, the marsh and the golf and marina communities, the settings here differ more than the shared address suggests, and so do the dock rights, the access and the association obligations that come with them.
The communities here each have a page of their own — Waterways, Richmond Hill Plantation, Buckhead, Buckland Hall Plantation, The Bluffs, The Ford Plantation. Have a look through and tell me which ones you want to see.
If you have your eye on Richmond Hill but you're not certain yet where you want to land, or which of the communities here would suit you, reach out! I'm happy to put a list together for you.
