Garden City sits just west of downtown Savannah, a few minutes from the city. It was built in 1939 as Industrial City Gardens, a place to house the workforce for the factories and plants going up west of town, and that working character still runs through it.
Today it's part industrial and part residential, and home to the Garden City Terminal, the Port of Savannah's largest container operation and one of the busiest in the country. The port drives much of the local economy, and it's a big reason the area keeps drawing logistics, warehousing, and manufacturing jobs. Housing here is mostly older — brick ranches, bungalows, and cottages on tree-lined streets — with prices well below most of Chatham County. No HOA on many lots, lot sizes vary, and access to I-16, I-516, and Highway 21 makes getting around simple.
Garden City is served by the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System, with Garden City Elementary in the city and Mercer Middle School and Groves High School both on Priscilla D. Thomas Way. School zones vary by address, and SCCPSS is making attendance boundary changes for the 2026-27 school year that affect Garden City schools, so confirm the assigned schools for any specific home before you buy.
