Vernonburg

ABOUT VERNONBURG

Vernonburg is a tiny historic town on a bluff over the Vernon River, about ten miles south of downtown Savannah. It's about as small as a town gets, around 140 people in roughly 60 homes, laid out along a handful of streets that mostly face the water. There's nowhere else quite like it in the Savannah area.

The history runs deep. Vernonburg was settled in 1742 by German and Swiss immigrants from the Palatine region, many of them indentured servants who had worked their way to freedom, and it was incorporated as a town in 1866. By the 1890s it had become a summer retreat, complete with guesthouses, dancing platforms, and floating bathhouses on the river. It landed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

Most of the homes are historic, in Federal, Italianate, and Colonial Revival styles, a number of them with their original outbuildings still standing. When archaeologists surveyed the town in the 1990s, 77% of their digs turned up 18th and 19th century artifacts, which tells you how much of the original village is still in the ground.

Prices run from the $400,000s up into the millions for the riverfront estates. The catch is supply. Only a handful of homes come to market in any given year, so when one shows up, it's worth moving on.

The Homes

The river is the center of life here. Many homes have waterfront access or dock space, and the Vernon River connects straight out to the coastal waterways for anyone with a boat. The town comes together around neighborhood oyster roasts and stargazing parties.

Vernonburg has fought hard to stay Vernonburg. Residents pushed for stricter zoning back in the 1950s, took on pollution in the Vernon River, and got a stretch of the Truman Parkway raised on stilts to protect the tidal marsh. That same Truman Parkway is what makes the drive downtown quick despite how removed the town feels.

The Amenities & Character

This is country living with the city close by. Quiet, leafy, and protective of its own character, but ten minutes from the Truman Parkway and a straight shot into downtown.

For the right buyer, a place like Vernonburg comes along rarely. People who land here tend to stay, and they tend to fight to keep it exactly as it is.

The Lifestyle

Vernonburg is served by the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System, with the feeder running White Bluff Elementary, Southwest Middle, and Windsor Forest High. There are private school options close by as well, including Savannah Country Day School. Because attendance boundaries shift from time to time, it's worth confirming the current zone for a specific address with the district.
